City Power state slanted mini substations no cause for concern

Eroding concrete bases to be replaced as part of JG Strydom SS refurbishment project.

Consistent service is dependent on the functioning of nuts and bolts.

Electrical infrastructure is a prized possession and residents have noted with alarm how select installations appear haphazard. The kiosks around JG Strydom Switching Station (SS) have been singled out for scrutiny as the concrete bases appear to be eroding causing the kiosks to lean at disturbing angles.

The matter was raised with City Power in June by Welridge Residents Association and the entity replied on September 21 with their intentions.

“City Power Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre is refurbishing the JG Strydom SS. The plinth in question is a temporary measure while we await the permanent board to be manufactured and installed,” stated City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

Concerns were raised about the damage the slanted kiosks pose to the electricity supply or whether internal fluids would be affected.

Mangena explained, “The units do not contain any oils or cooling units, it has SF6 gas. This is a non-toxic gas that poses no harm to people, animals, or the environment.”
