RiverWel Residents Association continuing the good fight against unkept surroundings

Residents associations do more than fill service delivery holes left by municipal entities but safeguard their community.

Tip a hat to the unsung heroes maintaining a level of cleanliness.

RiverWel Residents Association has kept their watchful eyes on any mess that may detract from their suburb’s appeal. Focused on the access points and bridges, RiverWel members carried out five projects aimed at meeting the minimum standards of presentability since the end of June.

Residents cleared a pile of litter at the corner of Jim Fouche and Cockspur Road on June 30, cleaned the curbs of Harpius and Daffodil streets on July 3, and tackled the Without Avenue bridge for the umpteenth time on July 20. The Without Avenue bridge was again cleaned on July 31 with the Cockspur Road bridge receiving attention on August 2. The crew does more than simply pick up litter but carries out full gardening services on the pathways, riverbanks and greenbelts.

New RiverWel chairperson Wayne Davies spoke of the importance of keeping the suburb clean and presentable. “It ensures RiverWel is an attractive place to live, which assists in maintaining property values and attracting new residents. It highlights the fact that the community takes ownership and pride in the area and that unsavoury characters and actions are not welcome,” stated Davies.

He concluded by saying, “Residents can positively contribute to the goals of RiverWel, or the relevant residents association in their area, by paying their monthly subscription fee and participating in regular events. Much more than aesthetic guardians, residents’ associations play an important role in communicating suspicious behaviour to security companies and ensuring crimes are reported so that adequate resources can be deployed.”

Outlining their basic goals, Davies advised, “RiverWel’s ambition is to create a safe, secure and beautiful neighbourhood. Get to know your neighbours and others on your street as it makes it easier to share information if any suspicious activity is noted on the street and criminals become aware that many eyes are watching.”
