Tulip Combined School pays a visit to local shelter
Children at Dorah’s Ark Children’s Home were treated to a spectacular visit where Tulip Combined School dropped off food and clothing and got to interact with them.
Tulip Combined School (TCS) visited Dorah’s Ark Children’s Home in Roodepoort CBD on August 12 to drop off food parcels and clothing as part of their social responsibility programme.
The project started when the Life Orientation class decided to have a food and clothing drive and then identified an organisation where they would hand it off, according to principal Mthimkhulu from TCS.
About 30 Grade Nine learners were treated to a tour of the facilities and had the opportunity to interact with the children from the Ark.
“Everyone was part of the project – Grade Nine learners decided to visit today and also sang some choir items,” Mthimkhulu said.
The NPO was established in 1997 and provides short and long-term shelter to 36 children currently as the number fluctuates. The maximum capacity has been cleared for 50 children. It relies on donations and sponsorships.
According to Thembi Radebe, the manager of the home, it started as a soup kitchen and later developed into a children’s home.
Radebe cited that they receive children from police stations, child protection units, and social workers and have the responsibility to take care of them from ages five to 18.
