End of November still the expected completion date of the Hendrik Potgieter Road rebuild

The surrounding community is still bombarded with traffic and large trucks clogging up the small back roads.

The ANC’s Roodepoort Parliamentary Constituency Office (PCO) has declared that they are happy with progress at the Hendrik Potgieter Road bridge rebuild site.

The body’s management committee held a site visit on August 21 to evaluate conditions at the reconstruction site which has negatively affected traffic flow and disrupted communities within the Roodepoort suburbs.

During the site inspection that was led by Members of Parliament Parks Tau and Dr Gerhard Koornhof, the PCO Manco met on-site with the appointed contractor to get real-time feedback on the progress made in the reconstruction. Overall, the regional PCO was satisfied with the update and the commitment given to complete the bridge by November this year.

Equally eager to keep their constituents informed, a DA delegation from the Gauteng Legislature held a site visit on August 26. The delegation met with the contractors and officials responsible for the rebuild and was met with the same guarantees on the timeline.

“According to the main contractor, they are on track to complete in November. Their biggest issue at this stage is the trucks still using the back roads and completely disregarding the signage, which will once again be addressed with the entities responsible for traffic law enforcement. Another site visit will be done by myself in the coming weeks to also see progress,” stated Ward 85 councillor Zoné Hughes via a Facebook post.

The number of trucks over five tonnes utilising the backroad has been a persistent issue that seems unlikely to be adequately addressed before construction is complete. WRAP residents association has sent emails weekly and WRAP director Martin van der Westhuizen has vowed to maintain the pressure on the responsible entities for the traffic issues as well as any other pertinent issues in his area.
