Roodepoort North pit bull breeder convicted on 59 counts of animal cruelty

Pit bull breeder was finally sentenced after seven years.

The NSPCA Special Investigations Unit, in collaboration with the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, announced yet another victory in the fight against animal cruelty.

On August 15, 2016, a joint operation was conducted with the police, resulting in the rescue of 16 dogs from a pit bull breeder.

According to the NSPCA, during the operation, the animals were found to be in compromised conditions, with evidence of severe scarring indicative of cruelty. The NSPCA, Roodepoort SPCA, and police worked tirelessly to ensure that the animals were removed safely and that criminal charges were laid against the breeder.

The case proceeded to the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, where inspectors and NSPCA veterinarian Dr Bryce Marock made numerous appearances to ensure that justice prevailed. After nearly seven years, the case has been finalised and the owner, Gershwin Perreira, was found guilty of 59 counts of animal cruelty.

The Regional Court handed down a sentence of R8 000 or four years of imprisonment, with half of the sentence suspended for five years, provided the accused does not commit further crimes against animals, during the period of suspension.

In addition, Perreira was declared unfit to own or be in charge of any dog for five years.

Magistrate Baloyi stated, “The seriousness of the crime must not be underestimated. It was distressing that some dogs were in so much pain that they had to be put to sleep. The victim impact statement gave further insight into the crime. The SPCA gave Perreira guidance as to how he should take care of his dogs, but he chose to ignore such guidance.”

Inspector Mike Allen of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA said they have fought relentlessly for justice in this case, and justice has finally prevailed.

“The collaboration between the NSPCA, Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, and police has been instrumental in securing this conviction.”

The NSPCA commended the courts for persevering and ensuring that no matter how long it takes justice does prevail.

“We hope that this conviction sends a strong message to those abusing animals,” said senior inspector Nazareth Appalsamy.

The welfare of all animals is protected in South Africa and the NSPCA will continue to work tirelessly to ensure their protection and seek justice for those who have suffered.
