Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen hero

Mechanical Services owners saved the day as he volunteered to collect a much-needed donation for the soup kitchen.

On August 18 it was all about a charity as NPC Mechanical Services owner, Dawid Groenewald volunteered to assist Fred and Martie’s Soup Kitchen in a simple way that brought joy to the hearts of stakeholders.

Representatives of the soup kitchen needed to collect much-needed food donations received from SPAR Suidrand, but had no transport; however, a hero came to save the day as Groenewald stepped in to offer transport – free of charge.

The soup kitchen has been in operation for more than 50 years serving the most vulnerable in the Claremont and surrounding community and sees more than 500 children and elderly relying on the soup kitchen for nutritional meals, hygiene products, baby supplies, and other services to overcome whatever crisis they may be experiencing.

“Poverty is a very complicated issue, but feeding and taking care of the most vulnerable children in society isn’t. This is a truth that is testified through love and support for our causes. Our children and elderly struggling in poverty need hope,” Groenewald said.

The issue of poverty is close to the hearts of Riaan and Yolindie Oberholzer, who took over the soup kitchen following their mom’s passing in 2008, whose dying wish was for someone to feed the impoverished children.

“Living in poverty is like being punched in the face over and over and over daily. It’s pulling yourself out of a hole, only to fall over a cliff. Every step in the right direction is rewarded with a hearty push several steps back. The changes to one’s mental health when living in poverty can be astonishing,” Oberholzer said.

The organisation would hereby like to use this platform to publicly thank everyone involved for their love and support for their cause and said that the love and support they receive ‘drives hope and love home to those a little less fortunate’.
