Jersusalema and Durban Deep residents flee to safety amid zama zama shootouts

Residents and their families fled to seek shelter at the Florida Police Station amid fear of ongoing zama zama shootouts.

Florida Police Station saw many fearful residents seeking shelter on Thursday evening, August 17 following frequent and intense shootouts between zama zamas in Jerusalema and Durban Deep.

Several residents ambushed the premises of the station by pulling up around 20:00 last night (Thursday), however, they had to sleep outside as the station was closed. Residents were furious and felt it is inappropriate as the station should always be open and serving.

The station commander Colonel Tsotetsi said that he does not have any manpower to deal with the matter and as a result, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) members were brought in. Residents will be escorted back to their homes with special operations units being called out for this.

Both Tsotetsi and JMPD’s spokesperson were unavailable for comment at the time of publishing.
