Christiaan de Wet Road crash requires Jaws of Life tool to extract patient

Local volunteer firefighters, alongside emergency services, helped to extract an accident victim out of a crushed car.

A car crash at the intersection of Christiaan de Wet and Hendrik Potgieter Road on August 3 resulted in a patient needing to be extracted from their vehicle and transported to a nearby medical facility.

According to Anthony Beer, Honeydew Community Policing Forum’s Sector 3 head, “a resident called the CPF at approximately 19:50 to tell us he just witnessed a vehicle losing control and crashing by the Clearwater bridge.”

Natasha Edwards from the Community Group Firefighters Association (CGFA) commented that they received a call for assistance at an accident at the said intersection.
“The information received was that a vehicle had rolled down the embankment of the bridge of Christiaan De Wet landing in the vlei next to Hendrik Potgieter [road],” she added.

“Three units from CGFA were dispatched and arrived on scene to find parties from First Help from Help24, and medics from numerous private services on scene. CGFA units deployed their extrication tool – the Jaws of Life – which was successfully obtained after two years of fundraising efforts at our annual golf day,” explained Edwards.

Upon finalisation of cutting the vehicle to free the patient, Edwards explained that a private medical service safely removed the patient from the vehicle in a stable condition. The patient was transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.

“The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and will undoubtedly form the subject of an investigation,” concluded Edwards.

“We are grateful for our community members who continue to look out for each other and act quickly to help where possible,” noted Beer.
