Matholesville shack fire claims lives of family of three

City of Johannesburg's Emergency Medical Services advised the public to take more caution with their heating devices during the cold season – this after three people died in a fire.

Residents were left heartbroken as a fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Matholesville.

The incident was reported to the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (CoJEMS) around 3:00 this morning (August 1) and said that a family of three (two adults and one child) lost their lives when their informal dwelling caught fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation, but in a media release made on August 1, Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for CoJEMS, asked the public to be extra cautious, especially during the winter season.

“During these extremely cold temperatures, residents are encouraged to continue to look after all heating devices while in use to prevent fire incidents at home,” Mulaudzi said.

No other people with injuries have been identified and an update will follow regarding the cause of the fire.
