Hoërskool Roodepoort reaches out to the community’s vulnerable children

On Mandela Day the school collected food packs to give to those less fortunate as part of their Roodepoort Cares project.

Hoërskool Roodepoort gave back to vulnerable children in their community on Mandela Day.

On July 18, the school distributed over 50 food parcels to Jozua Naude Primary’s feeding program.

Alicia Werner from Hoërskool Roodepoort explained, “During term two, our Junior Representative Council of Learners came up with a genius initiative to have a food drive, in which we planned to distribute the resources that we received to our own less fortunate learners, as well as those in the schools surrounding our areas.”

She continued to say they started a grocery list that consisted of 15 non-perishable food items, which were then packed into a food pack by each class. They then made a deal with the classes that filled these packs to wear casual clothing on the last day of school. There was also a special prize for the class that was able to fill the most packs.

“In total, we received 83 packs, as well as three boxes full of extra things that we simply couldn’t create a full pack with. We kept a total of 30 packets for our less fortunate learners, and then we started calling around,” said Werner.

She continued to say their first stop would have been Jozua Naude Primary, however, they were shocked to find out the school had 451 learners in their feeding scheme and the packs they had left wouldn’t be enough to feed all the children.

“We knew there were families with more than one child who could use the packs, so we took all of our packs to Joshua Naude, as well as the boxes filled with extras and we donated it to the feeding scheme,” she said.
