Delarey church opens arms to community at market day

Pastor of the church hopes to expand development wing to create young adults who act as forces of change.

Congregants created a beacon of light and forgiveness for those seeking salvation through community connection.

The Full Gospel Church of God Delarey held its first market day to promote its mission of inclusion on July 1. The market day offered a platform for existing members to draw in wanderers from the street in an effort to grow the flock. The event doubled as a fundraiser for the church who is aiming to boost its youth upliftment programme, which assists children in the area with essentials.

Pastor Ruben van Straten was called to the church five years ago. Originally a farmer from Limpopo, Van Straten still has strong connections to the soil but is now dedicated to sowing the seeds of the Lord in the blocks around the 14th Street organisation. The church is predominantly Afrikaans but the pastor has been driving additional sermons in English to broaden the appeal and reach.

Most of the church’s resources go to its feeding scheme, the children and pursuing programmes that help create better role models for young people. He lamented the times of today, stating, “We have a culture of everyone for themselves. People do not stand together anymore. I would rather we teach men to fish instead of simply giving it to them.”

The market sold out of burgers and hot dogs and children expended all their energy on the jumping castles and jungle gym as parents took a needed break. Reiterating their doors are open, Van Straten said, “This is the atmosphere we want to see throughout the community. There are many challenges but faith and prayer will guide us.”
