CoJEMS states nothing ‘sinister’ about cause of large tyre fire at Honeydew police station

The tyres were at the station after being confiscated in preparation for a political shutdown march planned for earlier this year.

A billowing column of black smoke over Honeydew on July 3 drew some attention.

The cloud of smoke extended high into the afternoon sky, visible from as far away as Horizon View and Krugersdorp. The smoke began emanating from Honeydew Police Station at roughly 16:00 and it was soon revealed that a stack of tyres was on fire.

Volunteer fire crew Community Group Fire Association assisted the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (CoJEMS) in controlling the blaze which was extinguished around 17:30. CoJEMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo relayed information from Honeydew police explaining that the tyres were present after being confiscated by police from nearby businesses in preparing for a planned political demonstration back in March.

Khumalo elaborated that the cause of the tyre fire was accidental and not intentionally set by police or staff.

“We found that rubbish was being burned in a skip nearby which caused the grass and tyres to catch alight. No investigations are being pursued regarding the incident as there is no suggestion of anything sinister,” stated Khumalo.

The fire is being recorded as a grass fire as registered by Engine 30 which was on scene.
