Update: A resolution in progress for Fleurhof dam

Fleurhof's sewage issues are in the process of being resolved, according to the ward councillor.

Ward 70 councillor Caleb Finn has given an update on the contamination of the Fleurhof Dam.

As reported on June 30, the contamination of the dam was due to sewage spilling into it which was the result of a blocked manhole, caused by illegal mining activity, explained Nombuso Shabalala, a Johannesburg Water (JW) spokesperson. He then further added the manhole couldn’t be reached as it was below the water level.

On June 28 Finn stated, “Two manholes have now been located and dug open below the sewage leak. A specialised truck was on site today to begin clearing the pipeline. The team found lots of rocks and sand lodged in the pipeline and could only make limited progress due to the slow nature of clearing these rocks.”

He then continued to say the feedback has been given to JW, who will arrange additional resources to return to the site and ‘continue clearing the line’.
