Teacher puts down chalk after 25 years

Bonamelo learners and teachers gather to celebrate one of their own.

Bonamelo School for Adults recently bid farewell to a prominent member of their school.

On June 3, teachers and learners gathered to say goodbye to Linah Sibanda, a teacher, who is retiring. Linah worked at the school for more than 25 years and is now passing her legacy on to the next generation.

“Education is very important because if you have no education you can’t do anything,” said Linah.

She added there are many instances where parents do their children’s homework, however, if the parents are not educated themselves, they can’t help their children.

Ruth Rantao, also a teacher, said the school is there to help those who didn’t finish school or never had the chance to go to school, she also stated some of their learners went on to higher education. They currently meet at Horizon Methodist Church.

She explained they offer education up to matric, and levels one to four are free, however after that there are costs involved. Ruth added that level one includes those who aren’t able to read or write, level two is the equivalent of grades 4 and 5, which they combine and level four is the combination of grades 10 and 11 after which students continue to matric. She added that they currently have more than 35 learners for matric.

Many of the teachers at the school were once learners there, she added, including herself.

Learners who are still in the school, as well as those who have graduated, expressed their gratitude to Lina, who was essential in changing their lives.
