Pedestrian killed at Hendrik Potgieter Road intersection between Fredenharry Road and Christiaan de Wet Road bridge

Traffic light in question has been without power for over a month and traffic is regularly directed by unauthorised persons.

A pedestrian was killed at an intersection that serves as the entrance to a popular shopping mall and wholesale retailer.

An elderly female was struck while crossing the intersection shortly before 13:00 on June 7. BCI Security was among the first on the scene and attempted to assist the female while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

“BCI reaction officers assisted with first aid until various emergency units arrived on the scene. It is believed that a vehicle skipped the traffic light, colliding with two vehicles and an innocent bystander. Advanced Life Support was requested, however, the victim passed away due to the nature of her serious injuries,” stated BCI Security public relations officer Paul Catlett.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s accident investigation unit was on the scene for further processing. The traffic lights in question have been without power for over a month and a displaced person regularly directs traffic through the intersection. It is unclear if the man, who is known to direct traffic at the Hendrik Potgieter and Jim Fouche Road intersection on occasion, was doing so at the time of the accident.

Hendrik Potgieter Road is controlled by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) which was approached for comment on the state of the intersection. Their feedback will be published once forthcoming.
