Maths teachers learn new tricks during lesson study

Laerskool Culembeeck Primary held a math lesson to help teachers with planning and teaching.

Laerskool Culembeeck Primary School held a maths lesson study on May 29.

According to Murimisi Samuel Mawila, Johannesburg West Maths Facilitator, the initiative was organised by the provincial department and with the courtesy of the provincial coordinator. The lesson was presented by Tshepo Mogopodi, one of the maths teachers at the school.

“This initiative was started to assist teachers to do proper planning and teaching in a classroom,” explained Mawila.

He also stated the Professional Learning Communities invited teachers from different schools, as well as all district officials from Gauteng for math to observe the lesson.

Mogopodi said, “I love the idea of the Lesson Study because as a maths teacher, I believe there’s so much that needs to be changed in terms of teaching and learning Mathematics. First of all, too much attention is given to matriculants and grade 11s who are supposed to be mature enough to handle their own school work while the little ones are neglected and expected to rise by themselves with little or no programs.

“This event is a way of bringing together maths teachers in the lower grades to be empowered and exposed to new and effective ways of teaching the modern generation of learners, also ensuring that we deal with strategies to help curb the stereotypes and hatred of Mathematics from the little ones.”
