Teacher and learner to represent Gauteng in Italy

Anaamika Maharaj was chosen after competing in several chess tournaments.

Anaamika Maharaj, a Grade 8 Crawfordian learner, and Gerda Kies, the Head of Sport, were chosen to represent Gauteng Province at Reggio Emilio, Italy. They will attend the 7th Giochi del Tricolore (Tricolour Games) from July 21 to July 31.

These international games involve young athletes competing in numerous sports, which include chess. Giochi del Tricolore was established in 1997 to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Italian Tricolore flag’s birth in Reggio Emilia. This is a significant amateur sporting event as well as a social, educational, and intercultural experience.

“I never dreamed of having the opportunity to go on an international journey just being a teacher but through hard work and dedication to chess, the chess federation selected me. I have been allowed to see Italy for the first time in my life. I am very excited to have the privilege to accompany the chess players as the coach,” exclaimed Gerda.

Anaamika was chosen after competing in several chess tournaments.

She began playing at an early age and never believed she would have the opportunity to travel to another nation to play the game she adores. She is both pleased and overwhelmed by her being chosen to travel to Italy with the team.

“We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have been given this opportunity. We’re counting down the days and working hard to make Gauteng proud,” Gerda remarked.
