Practical sewing workshop at Roodepark Primary School

Bernina South Africa in collaboration with Roodepark School presented a sewing workshop to learners to help them with life after school.

Roodepark School’s learners enjoyed an educational sewing workshop on May 12, where learners had the opportunity to practically learn how to care for their machines.

“Roodepark School and Bernina South Africa have a long history of working together to improve the sewing learners’ skills, and to develop their skills further for them to have a bright future in the garment/ fashion industry. The sewing teacher, Mrs Lotter noticed that the learners’ knowledge regarding sewing machine care and maintenance was lacking and saw a need for a workshop to improve their knowledge regarding this matter,” stated Nicole Rule from the school.

Linda Venter from Bernina SA presented the workshop in which the children experienced firsthand how to clean and oil the machines. She first demonstrated how it should be done, then the children could do it themselves.

“The learners were also taught how to properly thread an overlocking machine. Due to the practical nature of the workshop, the learners all now have the knowledge and abilities to take proper care of their machines. The learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Due to the practical nature of the workshop, the learners were able to actively participate which meant that they found it interesting and enjoyable,” Nicole added.

The school is focused on preparing children for life after school, which is why this workshop was so important. Children were given the necessary knowledge for owning their own businesses or working in the ‘garment industry’.

On June 14 Linda will be presenting the next workshop for the year four learners.

“Roodepark School would like to extend a heartfelt word of thanks to Linda and the rest of the Bernina SA team for all of their support throughout the years. We are looking forward to future endeavors together as a team,” Nicole concluded.
