Power struggles – a vicious cycle for baby sanctuary

Just In Time Baby Sanctuary needs power in order to help the community.

Just In Time Baby Sanctuary is among the many struggling without power.

According to Georgina Caetano, on Sunday, May 7, the power went out according to the schedule and just never came back on, this process has been repeating itself for about three weeks now.

Caetano elaborated that, during this time, they lost a lot of food including fish and chicken, which is expensive, they couldn’t bath the children as there was no hot water and they are worried about the lack of security when the power fails.

The most worrisome issue is however the fact that they had to lock the baby saver, as they can’t risk leaving a baby in the ‘baby saver’ without knowing it’s there. The power disruptions drain the camera’s battery and the power surge that goes back into the baby saver damaged the camera, however, they will only be able to fix this issue once they have fixed the issues they are having with the camera or it would just be a vicious cycle.

“My biggest fear is that we’re going to find a baby in a dustbin or the veld because the mother didn’t have access to the baby-saving device,” said Caetano.

A generator was donated to the sanctuary, but aside from the natural expenses that come with owning a generator, it overloads the plugs. After getting an electrician to have a look at it they were informed the generator has to be connected to the distribution board through the roof, so as not to overload the plugs, however, this costs around R4 000, explained Caetano.

She added, “It’s worth finding somebody to assist us with that because if we have a fire or we blow all the plugs and burn up the wiring, that’s going to cost a lot more and the insurance won’t pay out, because it would be deemed that we were negligent.”

Any person who would be willing to donate money to Just In Time to have their generator safely connected or anyone who would be willing to do the installation free of charge can contact Caetano on 062 045 8219.

Caetano also asked if someone is willing to sponsor solar panels for them to run lights during the night for security purposes.
