Wilrogate’s The Charity Box still going strong

The Charity Box takes care of the community in numerous ways.

The Charity Stores has been donating both goods and money to those in need since 2014 when it was registered as a both non-profit and public benefit organisation.

The idea for the store came from Robert Miller, the owner of the store in Wilro Park. After he retired, he started donating to charities as he saw a need for self-sustainability in the community.

Robert explained people do not always have money, however, they do have things lying around they don’t use anymore, which can be converted into money and given to those who are in need. Any goods are welcome, although they do have to be checked first, to be sure they can still be of use.

The Charity Box in Wilrogate Shopping Centre is not the only charity store – it is one of three stores where people can bring any goods they do not use or need anymore, to be sold at a good price to those who need them or donated to organisations who would put it to good use.

The money the stores receive goes straight to the various organisations they support, including animal shelters, animal rescue services, and a non-government organisation school.
Besides having to pay rent, the employees at the stores are all volunteers. According to Robert, they try not to take on too many charities as the funds would then have to be divided and each would get less.

Aside from the stores, they are also in the beginning stages of starting a monthly market where people can come and sell goods.
