Accident at Generaal Pienaar avenue and Ham street crossing
The notorious crossing between Generaal Pienaar avenue and Ham street has been the site of yet another accident.
Two cars collided at the intersection between General Pienaar Avenue and Ham Street on February 28.
According to an eyewitness, a silver Toyota Corolla driving on General Pienaar Avenue collided with a green Mazda which was coming from the opposite direction.
The occupants of both vehicles were unharmed. According to the driver of the Toyota, he did not see the Mazda approaching, until it was too late.
Less than 24 hours later another accident occurred at the very same intersection – this time a Ford bakkie that collided with a Toyota Etios. Again, the driver of the Etios claims he did not see the other vehicle approaching.
Besides these two recent accidents, there have been numerous other accidents at this intersection over the years; one of them resulting in the death of a motorcyclist on September 24, 2022.
On the question of adding a four-way stop, or other traffic calming measures on this stretch of road, Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin stated, “Accidents take place because of bad driver behaviour, not because of the road or the signs or the lack of signs. There is sufficient signage for people to drive decently. We have the scenario of people speeding down General Pienaar Avenue in both directions and others trying to get over, taking unnecessary gaps to try and get through the traffic.”

She then referred the Record to the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), who, by the time of publishing has not provided comment on this matter. As soon as it is received, an update will be published.
