Police officers appear in Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court

It’s alleged that the accused officers tried to extort money from a community member in Springs.

On Monday, February 20 two Dobsonville police officers made a brief appearance before the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court to face charges that include corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

Four police officers were involved in the incident, however, only two were arrested with the other two still at large.

The accused are facing charges of kidnapping, extortion, and possession of stolen goods and the case has been remanded to Wednesday, March 1 for formal bail application.

The four officers allegedly tried to extort money from a community member in Springs after conducting a search on Friday, February 17.

They confiscated money to the value of R35 000 including gold, measuring scales, and 25 litres of acidic mercury at the Springs home.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Spokesperson, Lizzy Suping indicated that IPID will oppose bail and said that the two officers are detained at the Roodepoort Police Station while the other two officers are still at large.

Suping confirmed the charges against the officers.
