Learners walk in confidence following generous shoe donation

"Some are staying with the elderly and it is difficult for their families to afford school shoes, the gesture means a lot to us because the dignity of the child is restored."

On Monday, January 23 learners from Durban Deep Primary School received brand new school shoes donated by Khulisa Social Solutions in partnership with Investec, Field Band Foundation South Africa, Starfish Greathearts Foundation and Sexy Socks.

Following a school needs analysis done by Khulisa Social Solutions it was discovered that some of the learners who come from disadvantaged families do not have proper shoes for school.

Principal Ivan Gqabi Msomi said that the learners will now walk with confidence when they go to school, thanks to the warm donation.

“We are most grateful for the donation of the shoes, most of our learners come from poor backgrounds and they need the shoes. Some are staying with the elderly and it is difficult for their families to afford school shoes, the gesture means a lot to us because the dignity of the child is restored. It will also help them to concentrate more in class and not worry about not having shoes,” said Msomi.

According to Khulisa Social Solutions Social Worker, Dineo Tseme, they are collecting information regarding the school shoes project in collaboration with Investec.

Tseme told the Record that they saw from previous interventions at the school that some of the learners have no shoes or have worn-out shoes that affected their attendance and confidence.

“We run a staff volunteer project and our staff paid for the shoes, Khulisa Social Solutions identified the school as a school in need, we have assisted 30 different schools around the country. We were attracted by the fact that the shoes are made from recycled plastic which is a great initiative that is also environmentally friendly,” explained Linsey Sherman from Investec Corporate Social Investment.
