Witpoortjie learner top achiever at his school

Mohau Mokhere, who attended Hoërskool Die Adelaar is the top achiever in the Hoërskool Die Adelaar matric class of 2022.

Mohau,18, obtained distinctions in six subjects and obtained an impressive 73% in the seventh subject.

Mohau said he has been accepted at Wits University to study a Bachelor of Accounting Science and wants to become an External Auditor or Chartered Accountant.

He said he was confident about his results and expected to do well despite having to contend with frequent, crippling power blackouts during his final year in school.

“The most important thing is to study because you want to, I have a love for my books and make time to study. Consistency is important, one needs to take their work seriously in matric, it’s more about knowing how to balance your time. My family supported me a lot and my Maths teacher kept pushing and motivated me,” said Mohau.

Mohau’s highlights for 2022 was his matric farewell dance and being part of the school’s prefect body.

His advice for the class of 2023 is to set goals as early as possible, be able to talk to your teachers and ask them questions while investing time on the subjects that hard to understand.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the matric class of 2022 achieved a national pass rate of 80.1% in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, a 3.7 percentage point improvement from 76.4% the previous year.

The chairperson of parliament’s portfolio committee on basic education, Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba, welcomed the marked improvement, saying it was encouraging, especially in the context of the impact of Covid-19 on the 2022 cohort’s experience of teaching and learning.
