New mom passes matric despite writing in maternity ward

"My advice to other learners who find themselves in a similar position is to work as hard as you can no matter how difficult it is because at the end of the day it’s worth it and you will get to rest later.”

Education is the key to a positive future and encouraging pregnant teenagers and teenage parents to finish school is very important for them to succeed.

Eighteen-year-old Lorraine Paile is one learner that has passed matric despite going through a lot of hardships in the past year, she passed under very difficult circumstances that included writing the Life Sciences Paper 2 in a maternity ward.

The Westridge High School matriculant said that despite dealing with challenges such as anxiety and stress as well as having to be discouraged by other learners, Grade 12 needs a lot of dedication.

Lorraine hails from Braamfischerville, a crime riddled community that can have a demotivating effect on learners.

But the teenage mom thanks her school principal Ms Ntuli and her teachers, her family as well as her friends for the support and faith they had in her.

“Throughout my matric journey, without them I wouldn’t have made it, when I was studying I knew it was going to be difficult but I would push myself past anything and overwork myself.

“My advice to other learners who find themselves in a similar position is to work as hard as you can no matter how difficult it is because at the end of the day it’s worth it and you will get to rest later,” said Lorraine.

Lorraine who gave birth to a baby boy said that the love from her family, friends and teachers kept her going, she knew what she wanted and that is finishing her matric and achieving her goals.

The new mom said that she is now looking forward to pursue her goal of being a lawyer.

“I plan on going to study at the school of law once I get financial assistance and become one of the greatest lawyers to serve in criminal justice,” said Lorraine.
