Snuggles the dog – set on fire; now a survivor

"She has multiple burns, some more superficial than others. Her inner right ear has deeper burns," Dr Pauline explained.

While New Year’s Eve signifies rebirth, new beginnings and a chance to make a change in your life, for a young pit bull terrier mix mother it was possibly the worst night of her life.

At about midnight on January 1, Cora Bailey from Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) saw a small brown dog running on the side of the road, clearly injured and needing rescue.

Despite the horrible things that have been done to this poor girl, she has not shown any signs of aggression or distrust.

“When I opened my car door to try and lure her in, she came running towards the car – like she knew we were going to help her,” Cora explained. Upon further investigation, Cora and Dr Pauline Smith noticed the female had signs of mastitis, indicating that she had puppies recently.
“We have named the poor girl Snuggles, because of her friendly demeanour,” Cora added.

Upon arrival to the clinic at Claw, Snuggles was sedated and Dr Pauline started treating her injuries. “She has multiple burns, some more superficial than others. Her inner right ear has deeper burns,” Dr Pauline explained, “She has mastitis, and is severely underweight and in shock.” She goes on to explain that Snuggles is on all the necessary pain and antibiotic medication and is comfortable.

“She was once loved, as she did not hesitate to try and get herself into our vehicle, and she snuggled under an arm with a sigh of relief. We will do all we can for her. She has suffered tremendous shock and trauma,” she continued.

Here you can see the extent of the burns in her ears.

Snuggles will be recovering at Claw, thereafter at Woodrock Animal Rescue will take her in to help her find a loving forever home. To donate towards Snuggle’s care or other animals like her, contact Claw at 082 926 3627.
