Powerful storm leaves trial of destruction
Hundreds of families are now assessing their losses after their personal belongings and homes were damaged by the floods.
Roodepoort and its surrounds were devastated when a powerful thunderstorm swept across the city during the early hours of Friday, December 9.
Communities witnessed floods on a massive scale as residential walls and dam walls gave way to the pressure of the heavy rains, leading to widespread destruction of vehicles, houses and business.
The persistent rains also rendered several roads unusable in the process.
While some commuters and motorists were forced to find alternative routes in the morning, others were not so lucky as they were caught in the storm, and had to find their way to safety. Luckily there were no fatalities reported as of yet.
Roads that have collapsed, become waterlogged, or have been covered in mudslides have been closed to prevent further incidents.
Some of the roads that were closed include Kilburn Road, Wilgerood Road and Schlapo Street in Grobler Park. The dams/ lakes that overflowed are Florida Lake, Davidsonville Dam and Fleurhof Dam.
