Roodepoort Electrical infrastructure one of hardest hit area by heavy thunderstorms

“We also expect lots of cable faults and equipment failures in days to come after the thunderstorms because most were exposed during the soil erosion that happened."

Through a media statement released on Tuesday, December 6, City Power assured its customers that they are dealing with outage backlogs after the recent thunderstorms.

According to the power utility, they are under tremendous pressure as they deal with the backlogs as a result of the heavy thunderstorms.

“We opened this morning with about 2 500 outage calls from customers affected across the City of Joburg.

“The hardest-hit areas include Hursthill, Roodepoort, Midrand, Randburg, and Lenasia, where heavy storms have damaged some electricity infrastructure, uprooted poles, flooded transformer chambers, blew trees on to the electricity lines and overhead cables,” explained City Power Spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

Mangena stated that their response times have been slowed as a result of having to navigate through flooded streets, damaged roads, and trees blown into the roads.

He appealed for patience and cooperation from customers as they tend to the challenges across the City of Johannesburg.

“We also expect lots of cable faults and equipment failures in days to come after the thunderstorms because most were exposed during the soil erosion that happened, some mini sub-stations submerged, others with moisture building in which may only be seen days after the thunderstorms. We have increased our resources in all the regions to work on the backlogs. While we will call individual customers to give them feedback, we urge them to also receive further updates from their councillors’ WhatsApp groups or follow @CitypowerJHB on Twitter. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this,” said Mangena.
