Marching to the beat of their own drums

The Boys' Brigade is focused largely on empowering the youth in various ways and the marching band is just one of them.

Every now and again the streets of Roodepoort are filled with the sweet sounds of rhythm, soul and enthusiasm. The source? The Boys’ Brigade 1st Florida Company’s marching band, of course.

The Boys’ Brigade is an international non-government organisation (NGO) that provides opportunities for children and young people to learn, grow and discover in a safe, fun and caring environment which is rooted in the Christian faith.

Although the NGO itself has been in existence for more than 130 years, local resident and First Captain Greg Allies only found the 1st Florida Company approximately five years ago.

“The Boys’ Brigade is focused largely on empowering the youth in various ways and the marching band is just one of them. The aim is to equip the youngsters with the skills, tools and knowledge that can help them pave their way after school,” a passionate Allies explained.

“We also try to expose them to as many positive experiences as possible. It’s important for them to realise that there’s more to life than their immediate environment and where they come from. I want to plant that seed – that there’s so much more to life. I want to have them thinking about their careers and futures.”

He went on to say that the group is currently 35 members strong and although the name suggests that it’s only for boys, there is a space for girls who wish to join as well. The group is also open to anyone between the age five and 100 years old.

The marching band enjoys performing at old age homes, orphanages, funerals and weddings to name just a few. This is also a service which is free of charge and done out of love for the art and the community.

“We are in the community and this how we reach out to the community. This is our way of giving back and although we don’t ask anything in return, we are always blessed,” he concluded.

Marching to the beat of their own drums, members of the Boys’ Brigade hope to grow even bigger and stronger and wish to invite community members to come and see what they are all about.
