Discovery learner impresses at provincial maths competition

The Grade 3 learner who hails from Florida made her school and parents proud for reaching the district level of the competition.

Nine-year-old learner from Discovery Primary Full-Service School, Reese Mitchell recently represented her district at the Provincial Mental Maths competition that was held on October 26 at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg.

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre is a children’s interactive museum offering exhibits and workshops in science, technology and math.

The Grade 3 learner who hails from Florida made her school and parents proud for reaching the district level of the competition.

Provincial Mental Maths is a competition where learners do mathematics calculations without the use of a calculator and must calculate 30 sums in 10 minutes.

The learners first compete at school level then the winner competes at cluster, then district and off to the provincials.

According to the school’s teacher Ayanda Dube, learners must be able to add, subtract, divide and multiply mentally as well as practice daily and have a love for Maths.

“We are extremely proud of Reese and the support her parents give to her, she’s been doing very well since she started school,” said Dube.
