The Sylvester Mashilo Foundation to hold fun run at Featherbrooke Village for 16 Days of Activism against GBV

All proceeds go toward mentorship and positive manhood programmes for young boys.

The Sylvester Mashilo Foundation (SMF) is taking a stand against Gender Based Violence (GBV).

To honour the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV and Femicide, the non-profit organisation that aims to create better men will hold a fun run on November 26. Partnering with Featherbrooke Village Shopping Centre, SMF is using recreation and sport to raise the all important social message of ending violence toward women in South African communities.

Starting at 07:00 at the Van Dalen Road South-based shopping mall, runners will take on either 5 or 10km routes around Ruimsig.

“To make a significant dent in the high-levels of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa a concerted effort is required. We all must see ourselves as an important element in the solutions for a non-violent South Africa,” said SMF’s founder, Sylvester Mashilo.

The United Nations have a global initiative against GBV under the banner ‘UNITE’ using the colour orange. All runners will be encouraged to participate in their brightest orange kit as the UN hopes to ‘Orange the World’. “In order to address the endemic violent culture in our country, activism efforts should go beyond annual campaigns to daily accountability. We all can be a part of the solution,” Mashilo added.

Founded in 2020, SMF aims to create a safer and better world for our children by supporting communities through programs that build young boys. The 10km starts at 07:00 with a R100 entry fee while the 5km begins at 7:30 at a cost of R50. Proceeds from the run go towards the foundation’s Boys Mentorship and Positive Manhood Programs and registration can be done sylvestermashilo.co.za/store or from 6:00 on the day.
