The stations note a sharp increase in the theft of motorcycles and scooters in recent weeks. Honeydew and Cosmo City spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dave Stanton stated that motorcycles and scooters are seen as easy targets because unlike motor vehicles, they do not have to be started first and then driven away. The two-wheeled machines can be carried away or loaded onto a transport vehicle and they are very easy to strip and be used for spare parts.

“It is very important that motorbikes are not left outside at night. We have even heard of motorbikes been carried out of locked yards and lifted over walls,” said Warrant Officer Stanton. “If you cannot afford satellite tracking, or don’t have a room or garage to park your motorbike in at night, it is strongly suggested that you take alternative measures to safeguard your motorbike,” he advised.

Suggesting alternative methods of securing the important assets, he added, “One can use a strong thick chain to put through the wheels and fasten it to a fixed object. You can also look online for other affordable theft protection devices, such as disc brake alarms that cost around R350”.
