Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel salute their best and brightest at Grade 12 valedictory awards evening

As well as top achievers in all subjects, special awards were given to key contributors.

Well rounded learners combine academic excellence with maturity and strong characters.

Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel held their 2022 Grade 12 Valedictory awards evening on Friday evening, October 22. As well as recognising the best achievers in all subjects, special awards were given out to learners who have exemplified the school’s ethos throughout their time at the school.

The Humanitarian Award is given to a learner who has displayed genuine care, kindness, respect and goodwill towards his or her fellow learners, teachers and community members. Jaiden Manilall received the certificate and a trophy as the learner who had shown interest and support towards those in need, whether inside the school or outside.

The heat of sporting competition can be a key indicator of temperament and the Sportsmanship Award was given to Claudia Bader and Reatile Segaetsho. The pair displayed fair and generous behaviour, respectful treatment of their teammates, opponents and officials. Always graceful and humble, Claudia and Reatile showed character by winning and losing with dignity.

The Seth Porteus Currage Call Award is given in memory of Seth Porteous, a brave athlete who sadly passed away in late 2019. “In his honour and as per his example, we award the inaugural award for a learner who displays Currage Call on the sports field,” said Principal Belinda Gibson. The award went to Claudia Bader and Megan Morgan for their extraordinary commitment and their unbeatable attitude and spirit through teamwork.

The consistent participation in cultural activities such as public speaking, extra-mural cultural activities competitions, internal and external Eisteddfods as well as serving at internal culture days, such as Curro Create, was also acknowledged. Tejal Hansrajh and Vuli Mbele were awarded the Biggest Cultural Contribution Trophy for dedication, commitment, and perseverance throughout their high school careers.

The night’s biggest award was the Executive Head Award. This award is given to a learner who has achieved well academically, has been involved in sports and culture activities and has represented the school in various spheres. Capping off a memorable evening and stellar contribution to Curro Academy Wilgehuewel, Vuli Mbele received the trophy for being best all-round achiever.
