Teacher assaulted at Allen Glen High School during 40 days celebrations

School and GDE yet to respond to questions regarding the incident.

Approaching the final days of a schooling career can come with a bursting swell of excitement.

It has become customary for grade 12 learners to throw off their symbolic shackles in what is known as 40 days celebrations. Learners of Allen Glen High School may have been over-exuberant in their revelry as Honeydew police confirmed a case of assault was opened relating to the Friday October 21 festivities.

“I can confirm that one teacher visited Honeydew police station and opened a case of assault against one of the learners for assaulting the teacher,” stated the station’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Dave Stanton.

The school was given the opportunity to respond via email inquiry on Tuesday October 25 but has yet to respond. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) was also approached for comment on Tuesday October 25 and while the email was acknowledged, no response regarding the incident has been received.

Questions to the GDE also enquired as to what steps they are taking to protect teachers as well as what steps teachers can take when threatened with violence, with no response yet forthcoming.
