West Rand paddlers among Fish River Canoe Marathon participants

Sean Jones, a highly experienced river paddler, partnered with a friend Jason Bryden, to finish the two-day river race in eight hours 50 minutes.

The 2022 Fish River Canoe Marathon got underway on Friday, October 7 until Saturday, October 8 in Cradock in a thrilling 80kms of wild-water splashing, and numerous challenging rapids over the two days.

A number of paddlers from Gauteng headed to Cradock in the Eastern Cape to gather at Grassridge Dam for the start of the fun-filled river race, including a few from the West Rand area, who train at Florida Lake.

The Grassridge Dam is an earth-fill type dam located on a tributary of the Great Fish River called the Great Brak River, near Hofmeyr, Eastern Cape.

It is the starting point for the Fish River Canoe Marathon, which ends in Cradock, the dam was constructed in 1923 and has been renovated in 1948.

Sean Jones, CEO of the Artisan Training Institute on Main Reef Road in Roodepoort, a highly experienced river paddler partnered with a friend Jason Bryden, to finish the two-day river race in eight hours 50 minutes.

Sean and Jason both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and came back home with a lot to share with local paddlers.

Chad Andrews who has been the owner/ manager of Canoe Concepts (sales and repairs of canoeing equipment) for many years and lives in Quellerina, Roodepoort was lucky enough to take two young women down the river, in a 3-man kayak (K3).

Gauteng Canoe Union PR/ Media Liaison said the experience was very exciting and enjoyable for Chad and the two women as he is highly skilled and experienced.

Tarryn Willis and President of Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Club at Emmarentia Dam, Anje Burger also had a super experience.
