Blood, sweat and tears for charity

Donna's Health and Fitness in Noordheuwel hosted their first Tri Challenge for charity since 2019 and raised R10 000 in the process.

Close to 40 people put their fitness levels to the ultimate test by taking part in a three-hour Tri Challenge for charity and raising R10 000 in the process at Donna’s Health and Fitness in Noordheuwel early Saturday morning, October 8.

Roodepoort Record Editor Adéle Bloem participated in the challenge.

Owner Donna Groothedde explained the aim of the Tri Challenge this year was to raise funds and create awareness for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) in association with ReboundSA.

“I started this initiative in 2011. Every year I pick a charity that resonates with me. With the support of my amazing team, we give our clients the opportunity to climb out of their comfort zone for an amazing cause. We allow them to test and push their level of endurance in support of those around us who potentially face massive challenges on a daily basis, challenges that we ourselves can’t even comprehend.

“This is something we did annually up until Covid-19. We were unfortunately unable to host this event for three whole years due to the pandemic. During lockdown, social distancing etc, we did a long stretch of live workouts for The Cradle of Hope instead. This was the first Tri-challenge since 2019.”

Donna said in 2022, they were invited by ReboundSA to join the Bounce-a-thon initiative to raise funds and awareness for Cansa.

Instructor Amanda Vermaak made sure everyone followed her instructions clearly.

The Tri Challenge started bright and early at 07:00 sharp and consisted of a one-hour TaeCross, one-hour RebounceFit and one-hour SpinFit.

“Participants loved every minute of it. They all say it was really tough, quite challenging but a ton of fun and excitement. They felt as though they were a part of a team and a cause greater than themselves.

“They appreciated the fact that they were given the opportunity to contribute to this chosen cause, given the opportunity to make a difference. A few of them commented on how fast the three hours went. They loved the comradery, the cheer and the motivation from our awesome team. I saw and spoke to many of them on the today [Monday] and there is a lot of stiffness too.

“Many of our clients and instructors (myself included) dedicated the challenge to a special someone in our lives that is either fighting cancer or has sadly lost the battle, so this event and the success there of was very important to me and wow! It was a great success.”
