Still no response from JRA after residents raise concerns about South Road

"What are they doing and when will they finish?"

Residents have raised concerns about the construction that is currently the result of heavy traffic on South Road as it is not clear when it will be completed.

According to motorists who use the road regularly, it has been causing huge havoc for quite some time for motorists and pedestrians alike especially during peak periods.

A stop-go is set up in the afternoons and some mornings causing huge delays and leaving traffic backed up.

One resident said that the yellow barriers keep falling into the trenches and it is extremely dangerous and pedestrians and cyclists have already fallen into the deep holes.

“What are they doing and when will they finish?” one resident, Carrie Beatt asked in writing to the Record.

“As it seems they are not accomplishing anything besides creating a huge mess and obstruction for everyone. Will they be filling these holes and tarring the roads to the way they were?” asked Beatt.

When Ward 71 Councillor René Benjamin requested an update on the road, she was told by the South Road Manager that the work that was measured has been completed but the challenge is that there is work that still need to be done according to the new engineers’ requirements.

It was also revealed that the project has exhausted funds and is unable to execute, which the engineer is sorting out with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

When the Record made contact with engineer Andrew Singisho, he declined to answer any questions and directed all queries to the JRA media desk.

Efforts to contact Kelebogile Mafa from JRA were not successful, after a week of waiting there was still no reply at the time of publishing.

As soon as an information is available on the progress of South Road, an update will be published.
