Residents in their 90s celebrated

Allen Rush, the village's manager, traveled back in time as he recounted some of the great inventions that occurred between 1928 and 1932.

On October 14, Sterlig Retirement Village celebrated nonagenarians, or residents aged 90 to 100 years old.

Seven residents, five of whom were able to attend the celebration, spent the day in the village’s community hall with their surrounding neighbours. Allen Rush, the village’s manager, travelled back in time as he recounted some of the great inventions that occurred between 1928 and 1932.

Alice Viljoen turned 93 this year.

“In 1928, Eskom’s first thermal power station, Salt River No.1, came into operation, and in 1929, Sam Forster invented the sunglasses,” Allen started joking, explaining how these inventions were discovered in preparation for his residents who were born during those years. He went on to explain how women were granted the right to vote in 1930, and how the South African Springboks defeated Ireland in 1931.

Burrie van der Westhuizen turned 90 this year.

Allen concluded his speech by asking the audience when some of our most commonly used products, such as the cell phone, microwave, and electric toothbrush, were invented. Residents enjoyed a morning of cake, snacks, and each other’s company.

Edna Cooke turned 92 this year.
Marge Volkwyn turned 92 this year.
