Sjampanje Street bridge to remain closed for safety

Residents and motorists are urged to exercise patience and caution during this time. JRA reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue and restoring safe road access as quickly as possible.

The Sjampanje Street bridge, a key connection between Lubbe and Johan streets, remains closed to the public following its collapse in December 2023.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) shared this information in a statement released on January 7.

The JRA has declared the structure unsafe for use due to significant damage, and road users are urged to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and diversions.

Preliminary investigations by JRA revealed extensive structural damage to the bridge, including cracked precast units, severe erosion downstream, and compromised culvert cells. These issues have significantly weakened the bridge’s integrity, making it dangerous for vehicular or pedestrian use.

To safeguard public safety, JRA has cordoned off the bridge and strongly advises against tampering with barriers or entering the site.

“The safety measures placed by the JRA along the bridge on Sjampanje Street are to protect the public by indicating potential hazards,” said JRA CEO, Zweli Nyathi.

Nyathi emphasised that unauthorised entry into the restricted area violates the National Road Traffic Act, Section 57 (12). He warned that removing or ignoring safety barriers could result in serious accidents, harm to construction workers, and increased traffic congestion. Legal action may also be taken against offenders.

In the meantime, road users are encouraged to follow the detour plan via Vintage, Nic Diederichs Boulevard and Lubbe Rouge streets. To minimise traffic disruptions, JRA has synchronised traffic signals along Nic Diederichs Boulevard and Florin Road.

According to Nyathi, the JRA is currently finalising detailed design plans for the rehabilitation of the bridge.

However, reconstruction will only begin once the necessary budget has been secured and the timeline for completion remains uncertain, pending funding confirmation.
