Low water supply continues for residents

Johannesburg Water issues statement following a power outage affecting several water systems.

Johannesburg Water (JW) released a statement on Saturday afternoon, October 12, following residents experiencing two agonising weeks of low water supply.

The heatwave in Gauteng has resulted in a considerable surge in water demand, affecting multiple JW reservoirs, towers and water pump stations. In light of this situation, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) implemented a Level 1 water restriction to manage and regulate consumption.

According to the statement, a City Power (CP) outage took place at the Eikenhof substation at 17:12 on Saturday, which disrupted operations at Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station, leading to potential impacts on several JW water systems.

Roodepoort is among the areas that are affected, and a team of contractors was dispatched on-site to monitor the situation. This comes after a ruptured pipe at the Honeydew Reservoir was reported.

In addition, Rand Water stated that the water supply systems in Gauteng are critically low, and the situation is anticipated to worsen with the ongoing heatwave.

The Roodepoort Northsider has sent questions to JW’s marketing and communications officer Nolwazi Dhlamini regarding the serious water issues in the area, and no response was given at the time of going to print. An update will be provided once received.
