Multipurpose centre construction (eventually) back on track

Construction on the long overdue Matholesville Multipurpose Centre is finally underway.

Eight years after the commencement of building at the Matholesville Multipurpose Centre, the project is still far from complete.

Work on the R48m centre commenced in 2016 as part of the City of Joburg’s (CoJ) strategy to stimulate growth and development in the area.

Yet, the job, overseen by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is only in the second phase of construction, which, according to JDA CEO Themba Mathibe, consists of a state-of-the-art library and computer room, parking facilities, stormwater infrastructure, water and sewerage connections, and mechanical and electrical connections.

Phase three of the project is set to include sports and other facilities, such as swimming pools.

Mathibe says the extended delays in getting the project finished, are due to ‘project challenges’.

“The project had a limited budget on commencement, hence a phased approach was adopted. With the available budget at the time, phase one was completed,” he said.

“As a result of the City’s financial cashflow challenges, the project experienced a delay in payment of the contractors’ invoices, which resulted in the contractor suspending work as allowed for in the contract.”

Mathibe added that while the project is far behind the original schedule, work on the centre has recommenced and is progressing well.

“The JDA apologises to residents for the inconvenience caused by the delay. The project is on track and we are committed to seeing the Matholesville Multipurpose Centre benefit the residents of Ward 127 and adjacent communities.

“The Matholesville Library will serve as a crucial resource for local communities, providing a range of benefits that promote education, social inclusion, and economic development. The library will offer free access to books, educational materials and resources, supporting learning for people of all ages.

“Thus far, a total of five local emerging sub-contractors have been appointed for the execution of the various portions of the work in progress. Other SMMEs will be onboarded as trades open up. These include painting, plumbing, waterproofing, paving and external works.”

The JDA has yet to provide a timeline for the completion of this long-overdue project.
