12-hour water outage after major pipe burst

A ruptured pipe at the Honeydew Reservoir leaves residents with no water.

A major pipe burst has left more than 20 suburbs without water. This comes after a pipeline ruptured at the Honeydew Reservoir on Sunday, September 29.

During the Roodepoort Northsider’s visit to the site on October 1, security at the reservoir refused journalist Tshegofatso Thobedi permission to enter and even stopped her from taking photos from outside the reservoir, claiming they were ‘acting on orders’.

The water outage has left large parts of Johannesburg without water, including Zandspruit, Northriding, Mogale City and Cosmo City, among others.

Johannesburg Water (JW) released a statement to the public, noting that management and contractor teams were on site yesterday, October 1 and repairs are currently in process. The work, which includes the delivery of pipework and fittings, started in the morning, and there is no estimated time for when the repairs will be completed.

JW issued a statement saying the repairs that need to be done include the scope of the planned maintenance work that was scheduled to commence yesterday and any additional work required as a result of the major burst event that occurred on Sunday.

Their teams continue to prioritise the situation and are also providing alternative water supplies to affected residents.
