Morero elected as City of Joburg mayor, again

ANC regional chairperson defeats DA in a challenge to win the City of Johannesburg mayoral election.

The City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Financial MMC and the ANC’s regional chairperson, Dada Morero, was re-elected as the city’s new Executive Mayor on 16 August.

Morero fills the open mayoral vacancy after former CoJ executive mayor Kabelo Gwamanda left office due to major political commitments and discussions over the last few weeks.

Morero was first elected mayor of Johannesburg in September 2022, after the DA’s Mpho Phalatse was removed in a motion of no confidence.

Morero defeats the DA’s Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku with 189 votes to 60. This follows the DA’s call for new local government elections. But unfortunately the Speaker of the Council, Margaret Arnolds, turned the motion down.

Arnolds further congratulated Morero on his election as the executive mayor.
