Residents of lower Helderkruin finally have proper water pressure

After 121 days with unreliable water pressure, residents finally have a proper water supply, however some burst pipes occurred as the pressure was high.

After a long struggle with little to no water, residents of lower Helderkruin finally have water.

The Roodepoort Record reported on the struggle residents of lower Helderkruin are having with low water pressure. On February 1, Ward 85 councillor Zoné Hughes noted they received a response after she posed a question to the MMC for the Environmental and Infrastructure Service Department during a council meeting.

Hughes noted the question posed by herself included if there is a possibility of installing a booster pump to supply water to the higher-lying areas and ensure residents have an uninterrupted water supply.

The response she received stated restrictions that were previously placed on the supply of water to the Whiteridge areas have been lifted. During another consultation between Joburg Water (JW) and Rand Water on January 19, it was established the restrictions weren’t recommissioned. To verify this JW installed pressure loggers over the weekend of January 27 and 28. Once the readings have then been measured, an intervention plan will be determined. The response further stated that even though a booster pump will improve the water pressure it needs adequate flow to ensure it will work. For this reason, it can only be installed once the issues with the supply have been fixed.

“Since January 31, residents in Valley View Estate’s water returned with proper pressure. However, with the good news also comes some bad news. JW is on high alert as the pressure is so high that numerous bursts occurred in the last two days. They are monitoring the situation,” concluded Hughes.
