Live electricity cable poses major safety risks for residents

What was said to be a temporary solution for an exploded mini substation now poses major safety concerns for Grobler Park residents.

Residents of Grobler Park are fed up with the empty promises received from City Power officials. This comes after a major explosion from a mini substation in Pannevis Street which happened in December 2022.

It is understood that City Power fixed the substation by supplying a feeder cable to another substation close by with the promise of it being a temporary solution, however, this cable poses risks for residents and their children.

“There was a problem with the electricity in December – there was an explosion with the box next door and when they came to fix it, they ran the cable across the gate, and every time we go through the gate, we cross over the live cable,” a resident cited.

They said that they are at their wit’s end and have been tirelessly communicating with City Power and Ward 71 councillor Rene Benjamin but with no luck.

“When the City Power contractors came, they opted to run the electricity wires across our gate without our consent. We came back from church to find it there. Since then we have been communicating with City Power and the councillor with no luck. This is a serious safety hazard,” another resident said.

“I’m not sure about the time frame exactly, but the new cable has been here since December after the heavy rains,” the resident continued.

City Power responded to the matter and said that in general, a temporary fix is only for a few months and when it gives in, customers should log a call for assistance. The purpose of a temporary fix is to get customers restored in a short space of time.

“I had a chat with my Field Services Manager, David Makoni about this and he advised that the customer log a call which we will escalate,” Zaheera Walker from City Power said.
