Municipal bin and gate motor thefts on the rise

A Florida police officer urges residents to be vigilant as the theft of these items are on the rise.

Theft of municipal bins and gate motors has been increasing at an alarming rate in the whole of the Roodepoort region.

This was confirmed by Florida Police Station officer, Constable Cisky Mashele.

Mashele, who mainly deals with social crimes in both sectors of Florida, says gate motor thefts occur multiple times per month. However, municipal bin thefts are a more frequent concern, with reports surfacing almost every week, particularly on dustbin collection days.

“We are urging residents to be vigilant and, if possible, store their bins in a secure location when not in use, and report any suspicious activities they see,” says Mashele.

Mashele says he cannot confirm who is behind the thefts, but when they conduct illegal mining operations in the area, they always find lots of bins that are being used by illegal miners.

He says with gate motors, criminals tend to jump inside the property, and they even remove the whole gate if it’s possible.

He adds if people can, they should install electric fences and spikes and ensure their alarm systems are working.

If you want to report any crime, you can call Mashele on 079 694 6759 or contact the station on 011 831 7000.
