Man arrested for attempted theft of transformer

A man who attempted to steal a transformer in Rietfontien was arrested with assistance of vigilant community members and a local security company.

A man was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal a transformer.

According to a statement from SDS Protection, a suspicious individual was spotted near one of the Rietfontein transformers in the early morning hours of June 15. A resident alerted the security company’s control room, and a response unit was promptly sent out.

“Reports indicated that the man was electrocuted, causing him to lose balance and fall on barbed wire placed beneath the transformer. The suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended and taken into custody,” SDS Protection’s marketing and logistics manager Reece Schwartz, said.

A collaborative effort between the security company, alert community members, and the police resulted in the arrest.

The man was taken into custody at the Muldersdrift Police Station.

The swift response ensured the safety of the community and prevented potential damage to the transformer, showcasing the power of teamwork in preventing criminal activity.
