Police arrest 16 illegal miners in Florida

Police arrest 16 illegal immigrants allegedly involved in illegal mining.

The police have arrested 16 illegal immigrants who are suspected to be illegal miners during a disruptive operation in Vala Umgodi in Florida, on Monday, May 20.

In addition to the arrests, the police also seized various tools that are commonly used in illegal mining activities at Jerusalema informal settlement. These tools included 37 pendukas, eight stamper pots, 13 stampers, five spades, one petrol motor, five steel penduka stands, two dustbins, 542 steel balls, two filter pots, 11 plastic basins and a 25kg bag of sand.

According to Florida Police Station Commander Colonel Tsotetsi, the suspects have been arrested and will be taken to court by the NPA.

Aside from illegal mining arrests, three additional suspects were taken into custody. These suspects were arrested for dealing in liquor without a license and possession of stolen cable.

The operation was comprised of Florida police, Crime Prevention Wardens, Fidelity Security Services, and members of JMPD.
