Man removing and tearing up EFF posters pleads guilty

Keinetswe is facing a fine of R6 000 or six months imprisonment and a suspended sentence of five years.

Roodepoort — A man accused of removing and tearing up 10th-anniversary posters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), pleaded guilty on April 23.

According to Botlholo “Zakes” Keinetswe (39), he handed himself over to the police after a video of him removing and tearing posters went viral. Keinetswe was also informed that a case was filed against him by the EFF.

After numerous bail extensions and heated arguments since last year July, the EFF finally found closure to this matter. Keinetswe pleaded guilty to the charges before the two witnesses could testify.

The state found Keinetswe guilty of malicious damage to property.

After thorough consideration of the charges and the impact it has on society, the court believes that Keinetswe’s action infringed the public’s right of choice and the party’s right to campaign.

The court expressed some sense of mercy as Keinetswe acknowledged his wrongful actions and saved the state’s time. The court considered his personal responsibilities which included caring for four children.

“I feel very happy that what we wanted and fought for has been resolved according and hope this helps to reprimand those who are still doing these actions,” said EFF Joburg Region member Poloko Moeng.

Keinetswe is facing a fine of R6 000 or six months imprisonment and a suspended sentence of five years. He chose the R6 000 fine.
