UPDATE: Ruimsig road rage shooter released

A man accused of shooting another during a road rage incident has been released due to insufficient evidence.

A man accused of shooting another person during a road rage incident on Handicap Road in Ruimsig on March 1, has been released from police custody.

According to West Rand Police spokesperson Captain Tsietsi Phora, the incident started in Muldersdrift, where one driver became upset at another’s driving. The two ended up on Handicap Road where they both got out of their vehicles and an argument ensued.

“The suspect took out his licensed firearm and fired a shot at the 40-year-old victim, killing him,” says Phora. “He then climbed into his car and drove to the Honeydew Police Station, where he reported the matter.”

Phora says the suspect was arrested and detained at the Honeydew Police Station, but was released after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided not to place the case on the court roll due to insufficient evidence.

“The case has been temporarily withdrawn, pending the collection of further evidence. Once this is complete, the case will be registered again,” Phora concludes.

Questions have been sent to the NPA, and their response will be added when received.
